Maintenance We're doing some server maintenance, there might be a bit of downtime, but it won't be long.
Live Referrers We've had a lot of users asking for a real time list of referrers (in addition to the current historical list of referrers) to their pages, so we've added it as a Pro feature. If you have a current Pro account check the Readers section of your stats pages to see where your visitors are coming from in real time.
Brief Service Interruption We experienced a very brief service interruption when a change at out datacenter resulted in an error that affected our systems, backups were able to handle the site for the most part but there was a few minutes of downtime for some of our users.
Apologizes to those who were affected, no data was lost and all systems are back to normal.
Not getting email from us? If you're not receiving email from us, make sure amung.us is allowed to send you email in your email program or on your (ISP's) mail server.
Be sure to check the spam and bulk folder from time to time as well.
Maintenance We're doing some maintenance, you may notice that your stats appear or empty or not complete, this shouldn't last long at all, one hour at the absolute most.
Maintenance We are doing a bit of server maintenance at the moment, there should be no noticeable effects except for the possibility of some higher latency while changes are pushed out, shouldn't take long.
Update: There was a tiny bit of unexpected downtime during the maintenance, sorry about that.
PRO: Minor Updates Quick update to let you know we've added the ability to configure the link target in the real time list of users and pages being read on your site. A number of users were asking for the links to open in a new window so we've made it configurable in the settings page of the PRO control panel.
New Map View for PRO Users We've added the traditional map view as an additional view on the PRO stats pages in the map section, for those of you who were asking for the heatmap, day/night, and cluster modes to be available alongside the fully zoomable map.
PRO users who make their stats pages private can now add additional users to their account who only have access to the stats pages with no control panel access.
You can mange these users in the Settings section of the PRO Control Panel. Currently, each site has a maximum of 2 guest users that can be assigned, but if you need more just let us know!
Stay tuned for some more updates in the very near future!
Floating Tab Widget - IE Render Error Fixed We've had a few complaints of the floating tab widget not displaying properly under certain circumstances in Internet Explorer. An update was just pushed out that takes care of that nasty little bug :)
DDoS Attack Again We are working on mitigating it as quickly as possible...
whos.amung.us Attacked whos.amung.us has been and continues to be the victim of a distributed denial of service attack.
The site continues to operate normally with some slightly increased response times at points. We are working to resolve this issue with our infrastructure partners, and the authorities.
Grab the whos.amung.us (real time users) app for your toolbar today!
Pro Support Coming to Wibiya Toolbar We've had a lot of requests for people wanting to use their whos.amung.us Pro account with the Wibiya toolbar and we're excited to announce it is coming very soon! The updated app was released to Wibiya last Friday, they will test it to make sure everything is OK and then bring it live very shortly!
The Wibiya toolbar version for current whos.amung.us Pro users will support all Pro features including updating the count in real time and more accurate user tracking.
I'll post an update here when the new version of the whos.amung.us Wibiya app goes live (keep your fingers crossed for very shortly)!
Our datacenter (while normally providing us with excellent service) is experiencing a problem with one of their routers handling traffic in New York City. This is making any websites hosted in this datacenter very slow to load for users accessing them through that particular router. The network admins at the DC are working on the problem and hope to have it fixed very shortly.
You can now use whos.amung.us in your Wibiya tool bar, you don't even need to grab a code from us, just install the app through the Wibiya control panel. of coure, if you already have a whos.amung.us widget, you can use the sitekey from your current widget code to seamlessly move your stats over to the Wibiya app.
Enjoy!
Merry Christmas! Thanks for another great year everyone, enjoy the holidays and get ready for even more new and exciting features in the new year.
New Widget We have created a new widget for everyone to use. It's a floating tab which can be positioned 9 different ways. Grab it from our homepage!
New Extension for Chrome We have just published a Google Chrome extension. Click the screenshot to get it!
Updates About to Happen! Hang on, we're just about to do the update we posted the other day since it got postponed.
We'll be doing some upgrades later today (around the mid afternoon in the Pacific time zone) to improve the efficiency of our services. Specifically this will concern maps, so you may see your maps act strangely for some time this afternoon, but don't worry all your map pins are safe and will return once the upgrades are done.
We don't anticipate any downtime but there is a small chance it could occur, but it won't be long we promise.
You'll notice on your stats dashboard, if you are using our javascript based widgets, a listing of text and images that people have copied off of your website. If content is leaving your site, how are you benefiting from that? Tynt allows you to add attribution links (among other features!) to content leaving your site to link back to your site, giving you credit for your work, and helps with SEO to boot!
Sign up for a fully featured Tynt account now and capitalize on the content that is leaving your site right now.
Brief Network Outage We just had a brief network outage of a couple minutes at our datacenter, we're investigating its cause (appears to be upstream) and ensuring all systems are functioning properly.
Apologizes for any inconveniences and thanks for your patience.
Comodo False Positive Comodo anti-virus is picking up part of our widget code as a false positive and we are in the process of remedying this situation with them. This is similar to what happened with Kaspersky and F-Secure about a month ago, both of whom verified it was a false positive. We are looking at ways to modify the code to prevent this in the future.
Everything is OK, and the content of the code is of course fine.
100 Billion Widgets Served! Today we have served our 100 billionth widget. That's 100,000,000,000 since we started whos.amung.us just over two years ago!
Another interesting tidbit of information is that during peak times we track 1 million concurrent users across all participating websites. So take that little widget you have on your site, add everyone else's and they add up to 1,000,000 online readers!
If you have been using Kaspersky Anti Virus products and have been getting a warning on pages where whos.amung.us widgets are installed in the past day, don't worry! This is a false positive and not an actual virus or trojan as may be reported.
I have contacted Kaspersky and they immediately confirmed that it was a false positive and the next update will fix this issue. Thanks to Kaspersky for responding so quickly!
If you have any questions please don't hesitate to contact us.
Update: 12:53:39 Kaspersky has responded and stated that they have updated their virus definition and signature file - false positives should no longer occur. Please contact us if there are any more concerns.
Update: 14:42:18 Just verified with an installation of Kaspersky AV 2010 that the false positive no longer appears. Thanks to Kaspersky for a prompt response!
Update: 16:42:18 There have been some reports of other AV programs giving the same positive, if you are getting these notices please contact us so we can work with them to get rid of this false positive. The piece of code causing the issue has been removed until we can get everything sorted out.
Update: 18:08:00 F-Secure has confirmed this is a false positive as well and has issued an update.
First of all I want to apologize for the intermittent down time we had a few hours ago, we're responding to all your emails and want to thank you for bearing with us. As to what happened, we made a network wide change (to improve the speed and, ironically, the stability of our services) that (clearly) did not go as planned, we expected a few minutes of downtime at most but experienced a combined total of quite a bit more. The change was easy to implement but we were experiencing hugely unreliable communication between servers when implemented. After much frustration and work we decided to revert the change and everything is work fine again.
I'd also like to apologize for the lack of real time communication with our users, since this change affected ALL of the servers we were unable to inform you of what was going on. Next time we make a network change like this we will phase it in if possible so as to minimize disturbances should we experience inconsistent behavior like we did today.
Thanks for your patience, and look for some new products very soon!
Watch the Spread of Firefox 3.5 in Real Time! As the browser of choice here at whos.amung.us we always try to stay up to date on the latest Firefox happenings, and since we like stats so much we decided to combine the two and chart, map, and list the usage of the new Firefox 3.5 browser (which rocks by the way), check it out at http://whos.amung.us/firefox
Downtime We experienced some downtime earlier today, we're working to find the root cause of the problem - all data will be restored shortly.
Update: 17:42:12 We've found the source of the problem and are working on resolving it, we do not anticipate any more downtime while we fix the problem. Thanks for your patience. All data is being restored as we speak.

whos.amung.us Speaks More Languages! We've added support for more languages to the essential parts of the site for now, we'll be translating the help section in the future.
As you can see in the top right hand corner of every page is a language indicator, clicking on it will allow you to select a new language and store it so when you come back whos.amung.us is in your native language. One note: we can only respond to emails that are in English at the moment.
For now we are offering: English, French, Chinese, Spanish, German, Brazilian Portuguese, Italian, Korean, Russian, and Polish. We will be adding more languages in the future though so more people can take advantage of whos.amung.us services.
We are also launching a new service of whos.amung.us called Custom Solutions. This will appeal mainly to owners of networks, or users who want API access, while leveraging our infrastructure and taking a strain of their own. We are able to work with you to put a statistics solution in place that meets your needs and desires. We can do everything from providing simple API access so you can assign widgets to new users, to real time updating widgets, to new custom widgets (say you want a widget that shows the flags of the last 100 countries to visit your site in a new scrolling display), we can accommodate pretty much any request and look forward to working with more of you. If this is something that you may be interested in please contact us.
Upgrades We are doing some updates and upgrades right now so if you notice any erratic behavior let us know.
These upgrades are to better utilize our current infrastructure and keep the whos.amung.us system running nice and snappy.
Merry Christmas! Merry Christmas to all our users! Enjoy the holidays and thanks for your continued support of whos.amung.us.
Keep an eye out for lots more features coming in the new year!
Support For More Languages We're happy to announce that we'd like to embrace our international community by offering more languages.
Pro We receive many emails from our users asking about extra features we currently do not offer. So we are doing something about it!
We have started development of a Pro version of whos.amung.us. This version will give you more control over your stats pages and widgets. You will be able to customize your stats pages. Such customizations will include changing colors of graphs, re-arranging stats themselves, using your own logos, hiding certain stats, no ads, etc. Immediately, there will be two more widgets available: an invisible widget, and a pure text widget. There will also be more stats, a major upgrade will be zoomable maps!
This is just the beginning. As we work on Pro, we will be posting updates and screenshots on our blog. We may also have a limited beta test session. If you're interested in participating, get in touch with us.
We ask you to visit http://whos.amung.us/pro/ to read more and to take a couple of minutes filling out our survey with any ideas you have!
Just following up to our message yesterday, we've made some changes that have had fantastic results, as you can probably tell with the speed of the whos.amung.us service now!
Thanks for sticking with us during the slow down, if you do notice anything weird or something not working, let us know by contacting us.
Keep an eye out for new features very soon :)
Hold On! We are making some changes to the system for performance reasons so just hang on and we'll be back to full strength in a bit.
If you notice some erratic behavior it's because of us and we'll have it fixed soon.
Here We Go! Thanks for the patience during the last few days transition! We're still working on some minor fixes here and there, but all the major stuff has been sorted out.
Let us know what you think, if you spot something out of place or have a question about the service and site drop us a line! We'll be sure to get back to you ASAP!
Hang On! We're working on fixing the slowdowns as we transition the site, hang on just a bit longer!
Big Changes! Please bear with us while we make some major changes to the whos.amung.us system to better improve the service!
You may experience erratic behavior over the next few hours as changes are finalized.
Map Upgrades As you have probably noticed if you have an old map, we are phasing them out in favor of the newer, far more efficient, faster, and cleaner maps we released last week.
While the old maps will continue to function for the time being they will display the upgrade notice until they have been updated. To make updating easy, we've created an upgrade wizard, all you have to do is click on the upgrade notice on your map, which takes you to the upgrade page, and then replace your map code on your site with the new code we give you on the upgrade page.
The new maps are self updating as well, so this is the only time we'll ask you to do this and we apologize for forcing you to upgrade, but in the end you end up with a way better map and we can provide a much better service.
Important! If you are using a MySpace map, you should use our customize page to reconfigure your map and use that code. As long as you go through the first step in the customize page your map will retain the old points. Also make sure that when you are done configuring your map you select the 'Non Javascript' tab at the bottom of the code before copying the code so you get 100% MySpace compatible code.

Firefox 3 Add-On Now Available! You asked for it and here it is! A beta version of our FF3 compatible plugin. It is currently only available from the link below, so get downloading and monitor your site directly from your browser!
Happy 1st Birthday! One year ago today, whos.amung.us came to life. Created in the span of an evening by Bart Bobrowski, whos.amung.us quickly became a popular presence on many websites and blogs world wide. Following the release of our 'classic' widget we've added historical stats, real-time visitor mapping, a few more team members, and many sleep-less nights. We love it!
To date we have served over 12.6 BILLION widgets, and at peak loads we serve well over 2,000 widgets/second!
Thanks to all of you, who made it possible! We're counting on you (no pun intended) to continue enjoying our service for many years to come.
New Map Features As some of you have already noticed we've added a couple of new features to the maps. First of all the embeddable maps got a bit of loving and are now a bit cleaner and operate much faster. We've also added a link to our map help page on the embeddable maps. This contains the answers to some of the most common questions we get about maps, making it easier to use the maps. We will be continually updating the maps help page with common questions we get.
Secondly, we've added a couple of new features the the large map on the stats pages; you can now view the map in a few different display modes. Heat mode and normal mode are still there and operate as before, just a bit quicker. Cluster mode displays the map points as circles where the larger the circle the more people have visited your site from that location. Finally, we've also added day/night mode where we show, in real time, the portions of the world that are currently in night time or day time. This can be cool to watch as you can quickly see the night owls browsing your site!
Check out a sample of the new detailed map features!
Stay tuned for future upgrades to the site and maps...
Merry Christmas Everyone! On behalf of all of us at whos.amung.us, Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
We would like to thank every one of our users, and cannot express how glad we are that you enjoy using our service. We promise you haven't seen anything yet, and there will be big changes coming your way throughout 2008. Please stay tuned.
Performance Improvements & Map Pin Fix We've just released an update to our back end tracking software and it has made a HUGE improvement in speed and responsiveness of our site and the services we offer.
However, there is a slight bug with the maps, and we are working as fast as we can to resolve it. A very small number of users may have lost a few map pins in the conversion process (this is unfortunately permanent, although the service is free we make every attempt to maintain your visitor data), and active users may not show up 100% accurately for the next few hours while we fix this, so please bare with us.
Also since we've got our performance issues fixed we'll be bringing graphs back very soon!
Welcome candidates.amung.us! Everybody please welcome the latest member to the amung.us family, candidates! We've been hard at work the past while pulling it together and it has turned out to be a very cool app that should lead to some very interesting results. The best way to describe it is from our learn more page:
We provide a method for you to turn your website, blog or social networking profile into an endorsement for a 2008 U.S. Presidential Candidate. For years, established print-media publications, and large lobbyist groups have been the sole source of coveted endorsements made towards one candidate or another.
These endorsements are used as an important measure into the success of any political campaign, and we feel it's about time the concept is brought into the 21st century. If you maintain any sort of online publication, now you too can officially proclaim your support for your favored candidate, with a candidates.amung.us endorsement!
This also marks Amung.us's first foray into Facebook applications. We've made a Facebook application verison of candidates.amung.us that allows you to endorse any of the candidates on your profile. We hope this helps to encourage young people to vote this Novemeber and it will be interesting to see how the younger population on Facebook views the election.
Get out there and vote next November, but in the mean time show your support for a candidate now!
One final note, it will likely take a few days for the candidates widget to spread enough for the results to settle down, so the sooner you add the widget the sooner we can have consistent results.
We also *promise* to bring graphs back very soon, we've been doing some significant rewrites to our core statistic daemons that should increase performance several fold. On that same note we are working as fast as we can to get some new performance improvements implemented to keep the system faster and more reliable.
Map Data Loss While we were performing a system upgrade, we encountered a minor bug that, regrettably, caused a small amount of data loss to some user's maps.
Unfortunately we can not bring this data back but it should only have affected a small number of users, and in most cases on very busy sites where points are cleaned up quite often anyway.
If you were affected by this bug we apologize and have made some changes to ensure this doesn't happen again.
The graphs should be back online imminently as well, we've encountered some problems while changing the graphing system to perform better, but are working as fast as we can to get them back online.
On another note keep checking the site and this blog for a new very cool feature due to be released very soon ;)
Heatmaps We've been hard at work this last little while preparing a fresh addition to our phenomenally popular maps service: heatmaps.
Now all maps on the show pages, (whether you arrived by clicking a widget or an embedded map) have the ability to toggle a heatmap overlay, showing the intensity of your websites' global popularity at a glance. By clicking on the "Heatmap On" (or Off) text on the bottom left of the large map you can easily alternate between your regular map and heatmap.
We have also added the ability to embed small heatmaps in your website or blog, Get one now!
We thrive on good technical challenges, and take pride in creating new and innovative products. So we hope you'll enjoy the heatmaps as much as we've enjoyed creating them!
Map Pins We are tweaking the algorithm for displaying past users on maps. So don't worry if you see more pins, or less pins from time to time. Today we will probably have that worked out.
Maps on Digg, TechCrunch, and Cnet! Today has been a great day for our maps widget. First, Michael Arrington, of TechCrunch fame, gave the map a review that started a traffic surge. Adding to that, a review by Rafe Needleman at C|net Webware that ended up on the front page of C|net for a little while, and a ton of other bloggers who found our widget and either added it to their blogs or reviewed it, we really started to spread like wildfire. Then came the diggers! We ended up on the front page of Digg for more then 2 hours, bringing tons of traffic to the site. Throughout all of this (even with all our previous sites using our widgets, many who routinely have more then 2,000 people online simultaneously!) our servers never flinched once, see we told you we had made performance improvements ;)
Thanks to all who Dugg, reviewed, or started using our widgets!
Be on the lookout for a major new widget coming very shortly ;)
New Addition - Maps We have been working hard this past month to bring you the newest addition to whos.amung.us.
You've probably seen maps on webpages before, but not like ours! Dare I say we are probably the first to bring LIVE map widgets? The map, which you embed on your page, pinpoints the current online users by a pulsating icon as well as past users who visited your site by a static point. There is no need to refresh the page to get an updated map, it simply adds new points to itself every few seconds. So you can see where people are 'land'ing from ;). Highly customizable, we are sure these maps will please you.
There is no need to sign up for maps, as they're already on your stats page. However if you wish to embed the map on your website, code is available so you can show all of your users.
On another note, we have yet again increased the performance of our servers to handle the potential growth of our service. Alongside of that, made minor cosmetic changes to the already existing graphs and website itself, in an effort to make it as easy and pleasant as possible for our users to browse.
Thanks for sticking with us, we strive to constantly bring you more fun and innovative web analytics.
Some Major Updates Are Amung Us! Just a few minutes ago we released a major update to our system - maps (amung other things). We are just ironing out some last minute bugs for you early birds. Later today we'll post an official announcement.
Performance Enhancers & The Road Ahead It's been exactly one month since we last reported various slow downs due to our increased usage. Definitely time for an update!
Not willing to become victims of our own success, the Amung.us team has invested countless hours, working to revamp and improve our service. While I could certainly go on about the new servers we've added, database migrations (dolphin -> elephant), custom tracking software etc... that'd only be of interest to about 8 people.
Instead I'll talk about what's important to you, our end users!
Faster page loads (no more delays).
Expedited graph generation.
Improved user experience loading our stats pages.
Higher accuracy tracking of users.
Now with our performance issues resolved, we can get back to what we enjoy doing most, creating new and innovative products. In fact within this month, we'll be rolling out various updates so please stay tuned!
Once again, thank you for your interest in our service! whos.amung.us is a continuously evolving project, and we're always open to suggestions.
Site Slowdown We've been experiencing a huge surge in traffic lately, and our current infrastructure is stretched to the max right now, but we are working as fast as we can to get things back up to the blazing fasts speeds we used to enjoy, so just bare with us for a couple more days.
Ads You may have noticed that we have added some advertisements to selected pages throughout the site. Creating and maintaining a site that has become as large as whos.amung.us with no signs of slowing down requires some pretty hefty infrastructure. So we figured, before we lose the shirts off our backs we'd let Google subsidize it for us. Bare with us, they keep this whole thing free for you guys, the end users, letting you enjoy and use it on a continuing basis, as well as allowing us to add great new features!
On another note if you or your company is interested in advertising on this site please feel free to contact us.
Big Changes: A New Look With New Features We've been very busy the past month redesigning the site and adding new features, most notably graphs which allow you to view how many people were online anytime in the past. New users as well as existing users may customize their widgets thanks to our new color wheel.
Movers & Shakers! To our delight, we have made the Alexa Movers & Shakers list at #10 for the week of April 5th, 2007. Glad to see our popularity backed up :)
New Server We have already outgrown our current server, and have made the switch to a new one. I won't go into details, but it's very powerful and hopefully it lasts a few months!
One Millionth Widget Served 24 hours later, and we have doubled yesterday's widgets served count. Over 1 million widgets have been loaded in the first 8 days of whos.amung.us.
whos.amung.us Launches! The first product of the amung.us network opened it's doors: whos.amung.us. What is it? It's an embeddable widget which displays the number of concurrent users on a website. Installation is very easy, simple copy and paste the code you see on the main page into your own html pages. That's it. No setup or registration required. Stats are also provided when the widget is clicked on, primarily each page a visitor is on and which pages are most popular.
